Mel Lifshitz, A Big Fan of Menachem Begin Museum’s Design

Melly Lifshitz believes that there's more to travel than meets the eye.  It was during his countless travels abroad that he became aware not only about the vast difference between cultures, religions, and lifestyles of people across regions but also about how politics and leaders varies across continents and countries.

Among the countries in the Middle East, Mel Lifshitz often visits Israel, wherein the state of the art Menachem Begin Museum is located.  He is fond of the  Israeli politics and loves to visit the heritage center every time he's in the country.  The museum was inspired by the life and leadership of Menachem Begin a former Israeli PM and Nobel Prize Winner.

Mel Lifshitz loves the museum's design which was actually created  to represent Begin's own character. The structure itself is modestly built and has an air of dignity, just as Begin did.  The center displays Menachem Begin's research in the form of original documents and photographs. The structure was also built atop an archaeological site and a replication of the findings are exhibited in the museum. Also in the center are conference rooms, a café, an auditorium, and even a small synagogue. A small replica of the Knesset has been built so as to educate students on the legal processes of the Israeli government.

Through the Menachem Begin Center, Mel believes that people from outside Israel can easily associate the country's unyielding culture to its leaders.  The Center is a living memorial and the nation's tribute to a courageous fighter and fearless leader who worked for the freedom, future and security of the Jewish People in its own land.

The Mechachem Begin Center  is based on the cutting-edge of modern technological advancement.  It  is designed by Uri Shaviv and curated by Orit Gover. It creates an intellectual and emotional experience for the visitors through use of films, recordings and graphic employment of documents, posters and even the original furniture from the Begins' Rosenbaum Street apartment in Tel Aviv. Begin's story, fromBrisk to Vilna, from Betar to the Irgun, from opposition to government, is related in a riveting but instructive manner.

The Menachem Begin Heritage Center is located on the Hinnom Ridge, facing the Old City walls.

Melly Lifshitz Salutes HANC’s Mission

Menachem Lifshitz often supports organizations with worthwhile advocacies and missions.  For him, these factors speak a lot about an institution on how they carry out functions and services.  This what prods him to continue his support to Hebrew Academy of Nassau County (HANC).  He is currently one of the benefactors of their Beit Medrash Program.

The Beit Medrash Program provides motivated students of HANC with the opportunity for advanced Talmud study.  This learning program adds yet another vital dimension to the high school experience at HANC.  Mel Lifshitz believes that through this program, it's  not only the students' mental capacities are being nurtured but also their characters and how they interact with each other.  For Mel, the building of character is equally important as the building of minds.

Melly Lifshitz hopes that the principles garnered by the students  from advanced Torah study will undoubtedly translate into friendship, a respect for values, humility, emphasis on hakarat hatov (i.e., gratefulness), a continued thirst for learning, and ruach-which manifests as an invigorating enthusiasm for the Jewish experience.

While these are all essential components to the education of every student, a HANC education further emphasizes the importance of membership and active involvement in the community at large. HANC high school students have often initiated a program both to demonstrate solidarity with Israeli soldiers and support  beleaguered Israeli communities. Our students excel in various leadership development programs such as Ematai and Achshav, and they have participated in special meetings with notable Jewish leaders such as Yeshiva University President Richard Joel and Malcolm Hoenlein, Vice-Chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations. We encourage our youth to strive toward leadership in their adult lives.

Today, HANC continues to fulfill its mission to nurture and support many communities across Long Island. Students have always been and continue to be of the highest caliber. Enrollment at their Mitchel Field campus is at full capacity. Large numbers of HANC graduates pursue a year of study in Israel at high quality yeshivot, and HANC graduates are extremely well-represented at Ivy League schools and colleges of their choice.

Mel Lifshitz Enjoys Walking Around Yemin Moshe

Mel E. Lifshitz, a traveler and philanthropist, often visits Israel and enjoys walking around Yemin Moshe, one of Jerusalem's prettiest residential neighborhoods.  He frequents at the place enjoying leisure afternoon walks with his family.

It is said that in 1860, British philanthropist Moses Montefiore built new housing on a hill overlooking the Old City to help relieve the congestion and poverty in the Jewish Quarter. The first of several developments was called Mishkenot Sha'ananim. Today, a unique guest house is located there, which is used by visiting writers and artists.

This area is called Yemin Moshe, and easily identifiable by the large windmill at the top of the hill overlooking the Hinnom Valley on King David Street. The windmill, was originally built to serve the milling needs of the residents of Montefiore's new developments, but it was never operational because of the lack of wind where it was situated.

While strolling in the beautiful neighbourhood, Mel Lifshitz noticed that a great route into the Old City is to walk down the stairs past the windmill and through the Yemin Moshe gates to the street and walk across and up the hill to Zion Gate. This takes you into the city right near the Jewish Quarter and is a relatively quick way to get to the Western Wall.  Almost directly across the street from the windmill is Liberty Bell Park, which was established in honor of America's bicentennial. A model of the Liberty Bell is inside the park. Both the original and copy are inscribed: "Proclaim liberty throughout the land unto all the inhabitants thereof.''

Mel Lifshitz and his family's favorite hotel when visiting Israel is the famous King David Hotel.  The hotel is located not so far away from Yemin Moshe.
